LESSON 9

Making Sashings and Borders for a Sampler Quilt

The sampler quilt is a wonderful way of displaying a variety of distinctive patterns together. A well-chosen sashing and border bring cohesion to the assembly of blocks. In the following sections we will provide a number of helpful sashing and border pointers.

See pages 28–39, 44–55, 66–73 for the patterns shown in the photo and illustrations of this spread. Each square pattern block is approximately 9½ in (24 cm) per side.

Giving Sampler Scraps a Second Life

A sashing formed from lines of triangles (piece A) facing opposite directions. Position the pieces into a windmill shape at the corners. By using the scraps from the sampler patterns for triangle A, the colors will coordinate nicely even if you are working with a lot of different fabric types. For the background fabric, we recommend solid colors, small checks, stripes and other subtle patterns.
